FUCHSIA SHOW 2009

The Wellington Show had fewer people through the door which meant takings were down but the standard of the plants on display was good and plant sales went well.

It was great to see the lovely plants in the Novice Section and the enthusiasm of the growers.

A big increase in entries in the blooms/stems/sprays section and container plants and baskets meant that the hall was a picture and the judges had a hard task in deciding the various "Special Awards of Best in Show". Our new Judges Doug & Frances Burrus. Helen Moore and Ken Salmon were paired with experienced "old hands" and they did a grand job.

Best Novice Plant: "Celia Smedley" standard grown by Lesley Berryman.
Best Plant: "Beatrice Kavanagh" grown by Helen Moore.
Best Species: "Procumbens" grown by Mila Juventin.
Best Basket: "Marinka" grown by Mila Juventin.

Most Points Novice - Lesley Berryman. Most Points Senior - Mila Juventin. Most Points Open, Most Points Decorative and Most Points in Show - Val Astill.

Clearly Val Astill was the star of the Show as she is still a Novice only growing fuchsias for not much over two years. She tabled 48 container plants as well as blooms, stems and sprays. Well done Val!

Two Half Baskets "La Campanella" & "Sylvia Barker" grown by John Olds were much admired in the new class started last year.

Because of dwindling numbers of growers next year's Show will be held in conjunction with the Lower Hutt Horticultural Society's Dahlia Show in February. Both Societies are giving it a trial for one year as what we don't want is a huge hall which we can't fill. With willingness on both sides we look forward to a huge saving in cost and a partnership which could turn out to be a good "marriage".
